「煙囪大學」原是 1870 年代康寧市居民對這家公司的稱呼。這座小鎮居住著許多充滿好奇心的科學家和博士,康寧公司大舉網羅這群人才到工廠研發新產品並改良製程。
直到 1908 年科學家 蘇利文 (Eugene Sullivan) 博士受聘於康寧,無疑地宣示了研發技術將引領著公司的未來。蘇利文為康寧產業研發環境引進並奠定了一個探索的科學方法。對他來說,能夠調整玻璃的特性並找到新的用法,才算真正瞭解玻璃的化學性質。
